A revival at the intersection of open source and open standards

I served as a volunteer firefighter in California for 10 years and witnessed firsthand the critical importance of technology in helping firefighters communicate efficiently and deliver safety-critical information quickly. Typically, multiple agencies show up to fight these fires, bringing with them radios made by different manufacturers that each use proprietary software to set radio frequencies. As a result, reprogramming these radios so that teams could communicate with one another is an unnecessarily slow — and potentially life-threatening — process.

If the radio manufacturers had instead all contributed to an open-source implementation conforming to a standard, the radios could have been quickly aligned to the same frequencies. Radio manufacturers could have provided a valuable, life-saving tool rather than a time-wasting obstacle, and they could have shared the cost of developing such software. In this situation, like so many others, there is no competitive advantage to be gained from proprietary radio-programming software and many priceless benefits to gain by standardizing.

Western Digital and computational storage: ‘We believe it will happen’

Disk drive and SSD supplier Western Digital has spoken about computational storage use cases using SSDs and the need for a standard drive-host interface for computational storage drives (CSDs), indicating it wasn’t a question of if but when they become mainstream.

Computational storage aims to overcome the time issue created when data is moved to computation by moving a slice of compute to the data instead. One example of such a time issue would be when reading data from storage into a host server’s memory.

But open-source tech in space exploration mission has been a rare thought. But space missions are now focused on the use of technologies that are less expensive and more accessible. And therefore open source software in space exploration projects are pretty much be in vogue.

Technology played a key role in the entire Mars mission. For example, the 4-lb helicopters were contractors from recognizable companies like AeroVironment, Lockheed Martin, and Qualcomm. And behind its expansive software were thousands of open source developers from GitHub, the team of developers contributed code, documentation, graphic design, and more to the open source software that made Ingenuity’s launch possible, said a GitHub Blog, celebrating the moment in open source history.
